2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons butter

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon sugar (optional)

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon thyme leaves (fresh or dried)

4 oz cream cheese, softened

1/2 cup sour cream

1/2 cup mayonnaise

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Optional garnish: chopped chives or green onions

To serve: toasted baguette slices, crackers, or chips


Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, melt butter with olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add sliced onions, salt, pepper, and sugar. Cook slowly for 30–40 minutes, stirring often.
  3. Stir in garlic powder and thyme in the final 5 minutes of cooking.
  4. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  5. In a bowl, mix cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise until smooth.
  6. Add Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, mozzarella, and Parmesan. Mix well.
  7. Fold in the cooled caramelized onions.
  8. Transfer mixture to a greased baking dish and spread evenly.
  9. Bake for 20–25 minutes until bubbly and golden.
  10. Broil for 1–2 minutes for a crispy top (optional).
