Description
Crème Brûlée French Toast is the ultimate indulgence for breakfast or brunch! Thick slices of brioche are soaked in a rich custard, cooked to golden perfection, and finished with a caramelized sugar crust that mimics the classic dessert. Top it with maple syrup, fresh fruit, or whipped cream for a dish that’s as beautiful as it is delicious.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 thick slices of brioche or challah bread
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 3 large eggs
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar (plus extra for caramelizing)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon (optional)
- 2 tbsp butter (for cooking)
- Maple syrup or caramel sauce, for serving
Instructions
- Prepare the custard: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon until smooth.
- Soak the bread: Arrange the slices of bread in a shallow dish. Pour the custard over the bread, ensuring each slice is evenly coated. Let it soak for 10 minutes, flipping the slices halfway through.
- Heat the skillet: Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a nonstick skillet over medium heat.
- Cook the French toast: Add the custard-soaked bread to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Repeat with the remaining slices, adding more butter as needed.
- Caramelize the sugar: Sprinkle a thin layer of granulated sugar over one side of each cooked slice. Use a kitchen torch to caramelize the sugar until golden and crisp. Alternatively, place the slices under the broiler for 1-2 minutes, watching closely.
- Serve: Plate the French toast and drizzle with maple syrup or caramel sauce. Garnish with fresh fruit or whipped cream, if desired.
Notes
- For a nuttier flavor, sprinkle chopped almonds or hazelnuts over the French toast before serving.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a skillet or oven for best results.
- If you prefer a richer topping, try mascarpone or cream cheese instead of whipped cream.
